CHAPTER 15

Della turned a Tiffany lamp she’d just put out for sale one way and then another. She was trying to make sure the lamp caught the sunlight just right so it would grab a customer’s attention when they walked into the store. While she might have looked to anyone walking by as if she were focusing on her job, her mind was elsewhere.

How did the connection of Something For Everyone mean anything? How could a website where people listed things be what connected two very different people? And it wasn’t as though they’d even answered the same ad, and it hadn’t even been at the same time.

So how did that one small thing connect them and was it really a connection? Because Della was starting to think that maybe the connection was just coincidental. How many other people used the website to make connections, or whatever else you could find on it? Maybe it really was just a coincidence?

“Della? Are you okay?” Molly asked as she looked over from where she’d been readjusting items in the display case.

“Yeah, sorry,” Della answered as she shook herself. “I was just thinking.”

“I could tell,” Molly replied. “Anything I can help with?”

“It’s just this missing person thing,” Della said as she adjusted the lamp one more time and then moved to the vintage hats on a nearby display rack. “How often do you think people use Something For Everyone?”

“Well, let’s look,” Molly said as she moved to the counter and reached for her phone. She picked it up and began to type. “According to the internet, two million people use it every month and that’s a pretty significant number.”

“Yeah, I guess so,” Della admitted as she adjusted a netted veil on one of the hats. She frowned as she stood back and observed her handiwork.

“Oh my gosh,” Molly gasped as her hand flew to her mouth. She looked incredibly shocked at whatever was on her phone.

“What is it?” Della moved closer. “Is something wrong?”

“The missing girl, Sadie Kent.” Her eyes lifted from her phone. “They found her. She’s dead.”

Della stilled as the words sunk in. Sadie Kent was dead. Her mother had been right. “Oh, her poor parents,” she said softly as the reality of how hard the loss would be for everyone involved crept in. Her heart broke for the woman she’d met who had made such incredible muffins. Then, she remembered she’d just spoken to her friend Theresa earlier that morning. She must not have heard yet what had happened to her Sadie.

“Do they say what happened to her?” Della asked.

“It says she was found in her car. They think it could have been self-inflicted, but they’re still investigating.”

Della realized she was shaking her head. “Nobody I spoke to made it sound like she would take her own life,” although she knew that meant absolutely nothing. Depressed people smiled. Depressed people could seem as though everything was fine, right up until they took their own life.

“I’m sure the police will do a thorough investigation,” Molly said as she closed her phone.
